The Reading List

•October 28, 2008 • 6 Comments

I have been doing a lot of reading lately, something that I have neglected to really do for some time now. It’s hard to imagine how much you have missed something until you come back to it.

I have missed the way that it feels to just sit and read, to jog your brain and push it to the edge of exhaustion. The feeling that you get when you are reading a great book. The excitement, the sense of accomplisment, the euphoria. It’s kind of like sex really, reading a great book. I have decided to start making a reading list, and of course, reading the book on said list. Some of them (ok most of them) I have read before, but it is good to get back into the swing of things by reading over the things that you know and love.

I think I should probably make a new page for the list, anything that is marked with an X is complete, anything marked with an R I am currently reading. If there is something on my list that I do not own I will mark it with a W, if you have it and I can borrow it when I get there it would be greatly appreciated!

As much as possible I am avoiding junk books. However, just like with junk food it is good to enjoy a good book once in a while that really doesn’t make you think, something you can read through and connect with without the extra effort.

And of course, if you have any suggestions on books I should read, post them here! I will read pretty much anything but trashy romance novels — but I will pass those suggestions on to Heather.

“You can only apprehend the Infinite by a faculty superior to reason, by entering into a state in which you are your finite self no longer—in which the divine essence is communicated to you. This is ecstasy. It is the liberation of your mind from its finite anxieties.”

- Plotinus

Back to Nature

It’s been a long time, but I think it is time to get back to where I truly belong. Mt Katahdin is a great place to push yourself both physically and spiritually, and I think it is time to pay our old friend a visit.

This Saturday myself, as awell as a group of friends that I consider to be family went to Moncton to be tattoo’d. Mine is below as well as a brief description of what it is meant to represent.

The Knotwork in the centre represents inner strength. The Three Ravens are for Life, Death and the Unknown.

Ravens have been viewed in many ways by many different cultures, but consistantly it is believed that they bring with them a deep and powerful magic. The celts believed this to be a healing power and the power of prophecy.

The Raven is the bringer of life aswell as death, and is considered to be one of the oldest and wisest animals.

Symbolism

Raven is a contrary spirit. On the negative side, Raven represents the profane, the devil, evil spirits, the trickster and thief, war and destruction, death and doom, the void.

Yet in many cultures Raven also represents deep magic, the mystery of the unknown, death and transformation, creation, healing, wisdom, protection, and prophecy.

Raven is both the symbol of the sun, and the symbol of a moonless night. She is the birth giving light in the center of our galaxy, and the black hole in the center of the universe, to which we are all traveling to our eventual extinction.

Raven is the fatal touch of the Calleach in winter, the wisdom of Odin, the vessel of prophecy given to a seer, the mighty protector of the Western Isles, and the healing message of an Indian shaman.

Raven is a complex bird, both in nature and in mythology.

“I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad.

You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a human being, god-dammit! My life has value!’

So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’”

“Shame on us, doomed from the start. May god have mercy on our dirty little hearts.”

- Nine Inch Nails

they’re starting to open up the sky
they’re starting to reach down through
and it feels like we’re living in that split-second
of a car crash
and time is slowing down
and if we only had a little more time
then this time
is all we have
do you remember the time we
and all the times we
and should have
and were going to
i know
and i know you remember
how we could justify it all
and we knew better
in our hearts we knew better
and we told ourselves it didn’t matter
and we chose to continue
and none of that matters anymore
in the hour of our twilight
and soon it will be all said and done
and we will all be back together as one
if we will continue at all

shame on us
doomed from the start
may god have mercy
on our dirty little hearts
shame on us
for all we have done
and all we ever were
just zeros and ones

and you never get away
and you never get to take the easy way
and all of this is a consequence
brought on by our own hand
if you believe in that sort of thing
and did you ever really find
when you closed your eyes
any place that was still
and at peace
and i guess i just wanted to tell you
as the lights start to fade
that you are the reason
that i am not afraid
and i guess i just wanted to mention
as the heavens will fall
we will be together soon if we
will be anything at all

shame on us
doomed from the start
may god have mercy
on our dirty little hearts
shame on us
for all we have done
and all we ever were
just zeros and ones

shame on us (shame on us)
we knew from the start
may god have mercy
on our dirty little hearts
shame on us (shame on us)
for all we have done
and all we ever were
just zeros and ones

Misconceptions

I am a selfish, uncaring, unthinking, irresponsible, undeserving, ignorant, arrogant, disrespectful, unremorseful, disgusting asshole. I do not know anything about my friends and I care only for myself and my own interests.

I think of others last, always put myself first and have no sense of comraderie or commitment.

Breeze still carries the sound
Maybe I’ll disappear
Tracks will fade in the snow
You won’t find me here

Ice is starting to form
Ending what had begun
I am locked in my head
With what I’ve done
I know you tried to rescue me
Didn’t let anyone get in
Left with a trace of all that was
And all that could have been

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far away from me
I am
Tainted
The two of us
Were never meant to be
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
Everything to me
Gone fading everything
And all that could have been

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far as you can see
I am
Tainted
And happiness and peace of mind
Were never meant for me
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
Everything to me

“Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what ammends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.”

- Aldous Huxley
